Three years ago, Jupiter was in something of a spin. John Duffield, the firm's founder and chief, had an acrimonious row with the company's German owners over bonus payments and the dispute was resolved only when Duffield left to set up rival asset manager New Star. His departure, coming so soon after the retirement of star income manager William Littlewood on grounds of ill-health, prompted many industry watchers to predict the worst for Jupiter.
