FTSE Group is launching seven global equity indices focused on environmental and socially responsible investing.

The FTSE Environmental Opportunities UK index, based on the UK main market, and the FTSE Environmental Opportunities UK Aim index, will specifically target UK investors.

The latter is the first of its kind, providing a new platform for entrepreneurial companies involved in environmental services in the UK.

It will also introduce a new environmental markets industry classification system, another global first, designed to classify companies by sectors and sub-sectors according to the environmental products and services they provide.

The goal is to provide a base from which environmentally-friendly investment products, such as ETFs, mutual funds and derivatives products, can be created.

Xavier Rolet, chief executive of London Stock Exchange Group, says the indices will allow investors to more easily identify new opportunities in both the main market and the Aim index.
