The Government will be issuing a consultation paper on real estate investment trusts (Reits) in Budget 2004. Last week's Pre-Budget Report said a UK tax-transparent property investment trust would improve liquidity, transparency and scrutiny, provide access to property for long-term savings and could expand the private rented sector. The Report noted evidence from other countries suggests these vehicles have worked well where they are publicly listed, internally managed, closed-end companies, with a requirement for high distributions. Reits have been on offer in the US since the 1960s....
