Shop price inflation hits fresh high amid price cap talks

Shop price inflation rose to 9% in May, according to the British Retail Consortium, bringing shop price growth to a fresh high amid calls to enact price caps on food.

Rising from 8.8% in April, the May figures sit above the three month average rate of 8.9%.   Non-food inflation also accelerated, hitting 5.8% in May, up from 5.5% in April and above the three month average rate of 5.7%. However, grocery price increases did slow to 15.4% in May, down from 15.7% in April. This is the same as the three-month average rate of 15.4%, though still the second highest inflation rate in the food category on record.
