The UK government has announced its intention to pursue the "freest possible trade" with the EU for the financial services sector post-Brexit, while establishing "strong cooperative oversight arrangements" with the bloc.

In an official White Paper setting out its Brexit plans, the government said it would aim for the "freest possible trade in financial services between the UK and EU member states" as it negotiates its new strategic partnership agreement with the trading bloc. The paper said: "In highly-integrated sectors such as financial services there will be a legitimate interest in mutual cooperation arrangements that recognise the interconnectedness of markets, as so clearly demonstrated by the financial crisis.
