It took a brave asset manager to launch a European equity fund in the autumn of 2011.

Fund managers often advocate the benefits of buying beaten-up shares, but that is easier said than done when indices like the EuroStoxx 600 fall 22% over a five-month period, amid escalating fears of a eurozone break-up. In retrospect, however, it seems this maxim held true. Mark Page (pictured) and Laurent Millet were able to buy in near the bottom of the market when Artemis European Opportunities launched on 28 October 2011.
