The UK government has conducted numerous research projects into what has been described as "the most dramatic demographic change facing the world today": global ageing.

It projects that by 2037 in the UK more than 1.4 million more households will be headed by a person aged 85 or older.  This trend, which has huge implications for the country and for government planners, represents a dramatically different population demographic compared to any period in the past. This trend is coupled with lower birth rates and the potential for a decrease in population numbers, as younger people choose to leave the country because of Brexit.
