China suffered a perfect storm during 2018. Protectionist policies from US President Donald Trump, a slight deterioration in macroeconomic data, de-leveraging measures and government intervention in various industries resulted in a 20% fall in the equity market and a 5.7% correction in the currency after a strong performance in 2016 and 2017. Despite negative sentiment towards the country, the macroeconomic environment presents opportunities for bottom-up fundamental stock selection.
