European integration, as we know it, has turned 60. This is when the Treaty of Rome established the European Economic Community (EEC). Even though the project has been very successful on many fronts, it is now facing challenges. With much left to be done, the impetus has faded, with achievements like peace and a single market increasingly taken for granted. This has been fertile ground for nationalist parties focusing on issues such as immigration and economic self-determination.
