Prime Minister Theresa May has appointed Steve Barclay, former director of regulatory affairs at Barclays bank and Brexit backer, as economic secretary to the Treasury.

Charged with handling the government's relationship with financials services, this is Barclay's first ministerial role. He was elected as MP for North East Cambridgeshire in 2010, and then re-elected in 2015 and 2017. From 2010 to 2014 he was a member of the Public Accounts Committee in parliament, where he focused on achieving "better value for money in public spending" and "greater fairness in the tax system", according to his website.
