'Loyalty pays': Number of CEOs promoted from within firms increases

One in 10 FTSE 100 CEOs began their career at firm

The number of FTSE 100 CEOs that have been promoted from within the company has almost doubled over the last three years, indicating an increasing trend towards succession planning.

According to the latest Robert Half FTSE 100 CEO tracker, 41% of FTSE 100 CEOs have been appointed to this role after working at the company, while one in ten CEOs spent their whole career with their company. Phil Sheridan, senior managing director at Robert Half UK, said growing political uncertainty and the homogenised nature of markets meant firms were increasingly looking internally to find leaders, as they have knowledge of the company and the potential experience navigate the changing business environment.
