Fund consolidation slows after pre-RDR rush to shrink ranges

A widely-predicted spate of fund mergers and consolidations has failed to materialise this year, with the number of funds being merged or closed dropping substantially.

Following a surge in closures ahead of the implementation of the Retail Distribution Review (RDR) at the end of 2012, there was an expectation the streamlining of fund ranges would continue apace this year. However, data compiled for Investment Week shows mergers have nearly halved in 2013, while liquidations are currently running lower than this time last year. Lipper research shows there have been just 30 mergers of UK-domiciled funds this year (to 22 October) down from 52 at this point last year.
