Anger grew in the countryside as MAFF and its minister, Nick Brown, sent out confusing signals over exactly how many of the nation's apparently healthy livestock would be slaughtered. The "slaughter on suspicion" policy prompted members of the Farmers for Action group to threaten to barricade their farms.
Tottenham Hotspur moved to sack manager George Graham after he went to the press following a meeting with new club owners ENIC. At the meeting Graham got the impression that he would be given limited funds for transfers. New Spurs vice-chairman David Buchler was annoyed that Graham had breached corporate confidences.
