Worst annual equity returns since 2008 Global stockmarkets suffered one of their worst years in a decade in 2018, with the FTSE 100 reporting losses of 12%. Following the final trading day of the year on New Year's Eve, when markets followed tradition to close earlier, the UK blue chip index ended the year down 12% at 6,728.13 points.
