‘Supercycle’ was a word which slipped easily off the tongue, both before the credit crunch and during China’s great reflationary boom in 2009. You had to have a contrarian streak to doubt growing populations and consumer demand would drive commodity prices inexorably higher. All that changed with the global economic slowdown, and investors now question whether they need to own alternative assets such as commodities after all.
