Investors can be forgiven for sometimes feeling the search for income is like looking for a needle in a haystack, writes Martin Gilbert, co-founder and CEO of Aberdeen Asset Management.

It needn't be so, but it is hard to deny the scale of the challenge, or the impact of the drought. At the start of this year, more than $10trn of bonds offer only negative yields, according to the financial services company Tradeweb. The hangover from the financial crisis, approaching a full decade ago now, is clearly still lingering. Global growth remains patchy and central banks across the world have stepped in to help prop up economic activity, but the resulting financial repression has made income yield a scarce commodity.
