Brandon, six, seemed troubled at school. Described by his teacher as 'sad and grumpy', Brandon was withdrawn, had trouble concentrating, and tormented his classmates.

At home, he was either clingy or violent. Brandon reminded his mum of his dad, who had physically abused her. Mum and dad had separated and dad was in prison for a violent crime. His mother admitted to herself that she did not really want to spend time with her son. When Benita Refson founded Place2Be in 1994, she was struck by the failure of existing services to reach out to vulnerable children like Brandon.
