What crisis? Investment returns 'consistent' since 1900, says Brewin

Average annual investment returns over the last decade were similar to those of the last century, despite several global wars and a financial collapse, according to analysis from Brewin Dolphin.

Using data from Barclays' latest equity gilt study of asset returns, Brewin Dolphin divisional director Rob Burgeman analysed real (i.e. after inflation) investment returns over various time periods. He used Wealth Management Association benchmarks to create example growth, balanced and income portfolios, using inflation-linked gilts as a proxy for alternative investments such as hedge funds which did not exist until more recently.
