Billionaire investor George Soros donated $100m to Human Rights Watch, his largest ever gift to charity.
Human Rights Watch says Soros' donation, which will be spread over 10 years, is the biggest in its history and will be used to more effectively protect and promote human rights around the world.
Soros, who reportedly made $1bn when the Bank of England withdrew from the exchange rate mechanism in 1992, has an estimated fortune of $12bn. One of the world's most generous philanthropists, Soros plans to give away more than $700m this year.
"Human Rights Watch is one of the most effective organisations I support. Human rights underpin our greatest aspirations: they're at the heart of open societies," Soros says.
"Human Rights Watch can have even greater impact by being genuinely international in scope. Human Rights Watch must be present in capitals around the globe, addressing local issues, allied with local rights groups and engaging with local government officials.
"In five years' time it aims to have as much as half its income and a majority of its board members come from outside the United States."
