Henderson Global Investors and Gartmore were the two big winners in last night’s annual Investment Week Investment Trust of the Year Awards.

Henderson won the main prize for the night being named group of the year, just ahead of Gartmore which won two individual categories and was shortlisted in other categories.

Gartmore landed the UK smaller companies prize with its Gartmore UK Growth trust, and Gartmore European won the Europe category.

Henderson was described by the judges as a group ‘which consistently displays an ongoing, long-term commitment to the investment trust sector seeking to combine shareholder returns with good corporate governance.'

The Outstanding Achievement Award went to the acting director general Ian Sayer and the technical team at the AIC for their lobbying work on the VAT issue and the current AFIMD issues. There was also a special mention for Daniel Godfrey, former Director General of the AIC and Guy Rainbird, the AIC's Public Affairs Director.

UK Growth went to Fidelity Special Values; UK Income to Temple Bar, and Jupiter Second Split landed the split capital category.

The private equity award was won by Hg Capital, with specialist environmental trust Ventus winning the VCT category, and AllBlue winning the hedge award.

JPMorgan's China trust won the single country category and North America went to F&C US Smaller Companies

The Asia winner was Scottish Oriental, managed by First State; Schroder Japan Growth won in the Japan sector while Ruffer was named Global trust of the year, and Templeton Emerging Markets was first in its category.

The specialist category was won by City Natural Resources and Property went to TR Property.
