The FTSE 100 hit a fresh year high this afternoon as global markets surged forwards.
London's leading index climbed 92.92 points (1.8%) to 5,247.07 as US markets opened.

The index achieved its previous year high two days ago, when the it hit 5,210.17 points.
Mining firms lead the way, with Kazakhmys up 8.57% to £12.79, while Vedanta added 6.49% to £23.62. The sector was helped by Rio Tinto raising its production targets for 2009.
