Jean-Sylvain Perrig is the Chief Investment Officer at Union Bancaire Privee. He tells Alice Rigby why there will be opportunities in the US for some time to come and what a bout of positive trading in Japan means for his portfolios.

What has surprised you in 2014? The biggest surprise for us has been the weakness of Europe. Our growth expectations have been continually revised down as we initially thought we would get some recovery. Instead, bonds have done a lot better than we expected so those markets haven't fit into our scenario. How have you mitigated against those surprises? We mitigated by significantly reducing our interest in Europe and moving that capital to the US. In both cases, we have focused on equities so have maintained a strong position in equities.
