A 'lost generation' helps boost housebuilders

Neil Hermon, manager of the Henderson Smaller Companies investment trust, and co-head of UK equities at Henderson Global Investors, highlights three key reasons to be bullish on UK housebuilders.

When the Office for National Statistics surveyed 20- to 34-year-olds in 2013, it highlighted the crisis of a lost generation.  Policymakers quickly tried to tackle the issue by introducing the help-to-buy scheme, and the overhauling of planning procedures with the introduction of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) this year. These, combined with ultra-low interest rates, did a lot to help UK housebuilders in 2013, laying the foundations for easy credit and housing demand for years to come.
