European smart-beta ETFs see record growth in 2016

Smart-beta ETFs in Europe have experienced record inflows in 2016 so far with assets under management (AUM) reaching $30.6bn; a 40% increase from the $21.6bn seen in 2015.

The first three quarters saw $7.6bn of smart-beta inflows, beating the $5.2bn record set in 12 months in  2015. Worldwide, inflows into these strategies amounted to $45.9bn in the first nine months of 2016, compared to $31bn for the whole of 2015. Overall, 18% of all European ETF inflows were made up of smart-beta ETFs this year, in comparison to just 6% in 2015. Total AUM in smart-beta globally was $317bn in 2016, up from $251bn in 2015.
