The history of the Electric & General Investment fund makes for fascinating reading.

Formed back in 1890, the original company was responsible for the flotation of many bus and tramway firms during a pivotal moment in the development of the UK's transport system.  In the early 1920s, Balfour Beatty chairman William Shearer acquired the company as an investment vehicle for his family funds. Henderson then took over the fund in 1948 and it evolved into a diversified equity product.
