For Chris Higham, manager of the £124.5m Aviva Investors High Yield Bond fund, seizing new opportunities has come second to "avoiding the losers" during what has been a volatile environment for bond investors, especially at the riskier end of the spectrum.
It is an approach which had paid off for the manager over the past year as his defensive stance moving into Q3 helped him navigate the worst of September's high yield sell-off, with the fund up 4.4% against the IA £ High Yield sector average of 0.4%. However, the fund, which Higham (pictured) took over in November 2012, has also been a strong performer over longer time periods. It is currently sitting at eight in Investment Week's Consistent 50 chart and has a five star rating from Morningstar and a five crowns rating from FE Trustnet.
