As new rules regarding pensions freedom come into force next month, Simon White, head of investment trusts at BlackRock, explains how closed-ended funds could be an alternative and attractive fit for retirement portfolios.

The modern retiree has a new economic environment to contemplate. The solutions on which they previously relied to generate an income in retirement - government bonds, annuities, or cash savings - are now paying notably lower income.
